How to make these fixes on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify
Your scan report lists what to fix. This guide tells you roughly where to do it on the most common website platforms. Website builders rename their menus often, so we describe where to look rather than promising exact button names. If you get stuck, search the platform’s help centre for the words in italics, or use the scan’s “copy a to-do list” button to send the list to whoever built your site.
Not sure what you’re using?
The free scan guesses your platform and shows platform-specific tips under each fix. You can also look at your website’s login page or the bottom of your site for “Powered by …”.
The five jobs
- Page title and summary. The headline and snippet shown in search results.
- Business details (structured data). A block of code from our schema generator that labels your name, address, phone and hours.
- robots.txt. The file that welcomes (or turns away) search and AI robots.
- Sitemap. A list of your pages for search engines.
- Address, phone, hours and Google link in plain text. Usually done in the footer.
WordPress
- Titles and summaries: install an SEO plugin (Yoast SEO or Rank Math, both have free versions). Each page then has boxes for the title and description.
- Business details code: use a free plugin that lets you add code to the header (for example WPCode), then paste the schema code. Rank Math and Yoast also have local business sections.
- robots.txt: the SEO plugin has an editor for it. Also check Settings → Reading and make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.
- Sitemap: created automatically by WordPress and by the SEO plugin.
Wix
- Titles and summaries: in the Wix editor open the page, then its SEO settings.
- Business details code: look for Advanced SEO → Structured Data Markup on the page, or Settings → Custom Code to add code to every page.
- robots.txt: the dashboard’s SEO tools include a robots.txt editor.
- Sitemap: automatic. Check yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.
Squarespace
- Titles and summaries: each page’s settings have an SEO tab.
- Business details code: Settings → Advanced → Code Injection, in the Header box. This needs a plan that includes code injection.
- robots.txt: Squarespace manages it and doesn’t let you edit it directly. Search their help centre for AI crawlers to see the controls that exist.
- Sitemap: automatic.
Shopify
- Titles and summaries: each page, product and collection has a “Search engine listing” section.
- Business details code: usually added to the theme’s main layout file (
theme.liquid). If you’re not comfortable editing theme files, ask a web person. It takes a few minutes. - robots.txt: editable through a theme template called
robots.txt.liquid. Again, a job for a web person. - Sitemap: automatic.
If your platform doesn’t allow a fix
Some platforms don’t let you edit certain files. That’s okay. Do everything else on the list first, because the biggest gains (readable text, a clear title, your address and phone on the page, a Google profile link, reviews) don’t depend on special access. Moving to another platform can be a reasonable decision later, but it is never the first step.
